How a battery works is this: A battery produces electrons from the chemicals it holds. Basically, we get power from batteries thanks to the chemical reactions that go on inside it. You will notice that your batteries have a plus sign and a minus sign on the two implements or terminals on the end. On the batteries, plus means positive charge and the minus is a negative charge. When nothing is connecting the two terminals together, the battery retains its charge. However, when you attach a wire or mechanism that runs from the negative to the positive, the energy starts flowing out of the positive.
