Switches
When it comes to switches, there are a ton of different kinds out there. Do you know exactly what a switch does? A switch is an electromechanical component which allows you to open and close an electrical circuit. So if you wanted to operate something, you would turn on the switch to open up the electrical current and turn it off to power it down. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? Well, the reality of it all is that because there are a ton of switches, you are face with all kinds, each with different uses.
Types Of Switches
There are a ton of switches out there and depending on the primary reason you need it for, they may look vastly different. Take a look at some of the different ones out there:
1. Electrical switches – Technically, most switches are electrical. However, what is the first thing that pops into you head? It is probably a light switch with some sort of switch plate or switch cover. Switch covers basically are a minor decorative element to a room and covers all the electrical wiring and such.
2. Toggle switch – These are those little level looking things that you can move back and forth to turn the electrical current off and on. You can find these in a number of venues such as hobby toys and projects.
3. Audio switch – An audio switch you will typically find in custom installed sound systems in vehicles. Typically you could have one or more electrical toggle switches in a special panel or area in which to control the various components in your mobile audio set-up. These toggle switches are often found on competition performance cars. These guys are serious about their music and might have four or five amps, several subwoofers, equalizers and much more. There is not enough dash space in the world to install buttons and switches.
In this instance, a special control panel may be created just to house the various switches you have. You might have a covered toggle switch for special devices and even decorative switch plates to jazz up the interior of your car. It’s all a matter of design once the toggle switch plates are installed.
Wiring a switch takes an understanding of electricity and current flow and power. You could be working on a home improvement project and need to install switches for lights, a ceiling fan and even an exhaust fan. With these, you could use colored switch plate covers or special decorative switch plates. Heck, if you have a cabin theme going, you could choose rustic switch plates. However, with something more specialized as audio switches inside your car, you will likely have to find special switch plate covers for sale at a mobile audio retail store or online.
