Relays
Before getting into why you would need a relay, do you know what relays are? A relay is a device, electromechanical in nature, that act as a type of remote control switch to open and close a circuit which allows electricity to pass through it. These power relays are used in a number of different applications like computers, telephone companies and even systems that are automated. You might also find an electrical relay in every day household type of items like thermostat controls, refrigerators and even your vehicles.
Electrical relays have a sensor unit powered by DC or AC current. When you have an electrical current that goes over the relay’s threshold of what it can withstand, relay switches are activated to open or close the power going to it.
Whenever you add components to your car, especially if they are for your mobile audio needs like amplifiers, subwoofer and more, you will likely have the need for automotive relays. An automotive relay will keep power surges from happening and protects your equipment.
There are a number of different brand names on the market in terms of relays. Some are strictly for automotive use and some are based for other applications. For instance, Bosch relays are designed for mainly automotive use. You will find a Bosch relay or two (ok, probably more) that can be used in the configuration of your mobile audio needs. After all, amplifiers themselves draw a lot of electrical current alone and you need at least a 12 volt relay or stronger to handle it.
Relay circuits can be purchased at most electronics stores and can be used for a variety of purposes. You could choose from a reed relay or a timer relay. With the electrical relay, they do come in a variety of voltages. If you use relays for automotive use, you will not run across a 6v relay too often but you may need a 12 volt relay or even a 24 volt. It just depends on what you are using it for.
When you shop around for relays, you will just have to decide which brand to go with as many of them seem similar. You might find Panasonic relays along side Bosch relays. If you are a bit confused about which relays you need, consult with the electronics sales professional and let them know what you need a relay for. Chances are that they can help you narrow down your choices.
